With the opening of accession negotiations with the European Union this year, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have reached an important milestone. The integration into the EU requires 100 percent implementation of EU regulations, a prerequisite for full integration. The agricultural sector and livestock production in the EU are characterized by

  • High requirements for environmental and climate protection
  • Extensive regulations on animal health, control of animal diseases and food safety
  • Increasing requirements for livestock farming: space requirements, type of husbandry, breeding characteris-tics, feeding, curative interventions, use of antibiotics and emissions

While the adoption of EU regulations represents a particular challenge, access to the EU internal market, includ-ing the support measures of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), offers significant opportunities. Livestock farming in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova is currently facing a number of difficult challenges. While live-stock farming in the Republic of Moldova, with the exception of poultry production, has been characterized by a drastic decline in livestock numbers over the past three decades, livestock farming in Ukraine has been severely affected by the Russian war of aggression. Interruptions in energy supplies, logistical problems in the delivery of feed and operating resources, liquidity shortage and a shortage of skilled workers are causing significant prob-lems for Ukrainian farms. Against this background, the event aims to provide a platform to discuss current agri-cultural policy challenges and to discuss the opportunities and challenges for livestock farming in the upcoming EU integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
